This image was taken in museum of the Brush Factory for Blind Jews in Berlin. In a similar, though smaller scale, story to Schindler’s list the factory owner was able to keep his workers from being deported with a combination of bribes and explanations that they were doing vital, skilled war work.
This chilling visual cultural symbol embodies the oppression of the Jewish people more than anything else I believe. It may be a rag but it comes laden with psychological meaning.
